Champions Tennis has today revealed that for the first time in UK tennis history ball-dogs will be stepping on to the court at the Royal Albert Hall during this year’s event, taking place from Thursday 6th to Sunday 9th December.
In association with new event sponsor, Skinner’s dog food, the dogs, who are being provided by the charity Canine Partners, will be showing off their ball fetching skills alongside some of the legends of the game including John McEnroe, Goran Ivanisevic, Mark Philippoussis, Juan Carlos Ferrero, Mansour Bahrami and Tim Henman.
Tournament organisers along with tennis legend Tim Henman previously recognised that dogs share many of the same traits expected from ball boys and girls. The partnership with Skinner’s and Canine Partners will give the audience a glimpse of the incredible capabilities of the assistance dogs as well as some light-hearted entertainment. The tail-wagging furry friends will be stepping on to court during several sessions of the four-day event to assist some of the world’s most famed tennis legends.
Charlie Grave from Champions Tennis said: “We are so excited to welcome Skinner’s and the dogs from Canine Partners to this year’s event. We are always looking for ways to bring something different to Champions Tennis and felt that introducing ball dogs will bring a completely new dimension as well as supporting such a fantastic charity. It’s going to be great to see the legends alongside these remarkable dogs”
William Delamore, Sales & Marketing Director for Skinner’s Pet Foods, said: “We are thrilled to be sponsoring Champions Tennis; this is a sport we have not delved into before, so we are thoroughly looking forward to witnessing what is set to be an eye-opening performance, both from the players and the talented dogs from Canine Partners. We are in in awe of the work they carry out day in day out, and to be a part of the event is a privilege”.
Nicola Martin from Canine Partners said: “We are delighted to be given the opportunity to get involved with Champions Tennis this year. Retrieving dropped items is just one of the hundreds of amazing things our dogs can do for people with disabilities. Our specially trained dogs bring greater independence and quality of life to their partners, offering security, companionship and practical help with everyday household tasks. They can even load and unload the washing machine and fetch help in an emergency. Not only will our involvement in this event be great fun for the audience, our handlers and the dogs too, but it will be great to showcase our charity and what our dogs do for disabled people in the UK.”
Commencing on 6 December 2018, Champions Tennis is a four-day tournament comprised of fast-paced action and world-class tennis from the legends of the game, mixed with the usual tinge of humour.
